Save a Life

Did you know that blood donation typically declines during the summer months? However, the need for blood donations is year-round, so the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) to host a blood drive challenge in an effort to increase the number of blood donations.

According to the Chamber of Commerce:

Declining blood donations are an unfortunate national trend, with South Texas seeing as much as a 13 percent drop since 2012. Your donation, and the donations of your organization, will have an incredibly large impact in our growing community.

How To Participate?

The B2B Blood Drive Challenge is happening now through Labor Day (September 4th). Visit the B2B site to schedule an appointment with a local business hosting a blood drive or visit a local donor room to donate.

Participating companies include:

  • SWBC
  • The San Antonio Zoo
  • CPS Energy
  • Accenture

Exercise and Blood Donation

In case you’re worried about exercising after donating blood, Carter Blood Care offers the following advice:

Whether you are a basketball player, construction worker, a physical trainer or just someone who exercises daily, you need to take it easy after giving blood. High-intensity exercise after donation can cause fainting and may increase the risk of excessive bleeding from the area where the needle enters your skin. We highly suggest drinking a lot of fluids and waiting 24 hours after your blood donation to perform physically-strenuous activities. Similar to exercising, giving blood makes you feel great, so treat it as a day to relax and pat yourself on the back! Besides, you just saved three lives, so it’s time to reward yourself with a break!

Earth Day 5k and 10k Prep

Preparation

Prepare, 5k, Health, Fitness, Running, Safety

New runners and veterans alike can make mistakes when it comes to training and preparing for a race. Whether you’re unsure how much sleep you should be getting or how hard you should train in the days leading up to it, there is a lot of information out there to help you make the best decisions to perform your best on race day.

Helpful Tips

Here are some of the best preparation tips we found to help you get ready to run:

  1. According to Shape.com you should focus on your sleep two nights before the run. You will typically be restless the night beforehand due to nerves so get plenty of rest before those jitters hit.
  2. Another article by VeryWellFit.com suggests that you take it easy on your training in the week leading up to the race. Don’t overdo it or you will end up sore on the day of the race.
  3. During the actual race you should pace yourself appropriately. Active.com advises that after the first mile if you can carry on a conversation, you weren’t running hard enough. However, if you are gasping for breath, you may have pushed a bit too hard.

Feel ready to run, yet?

This month, San Antonio is participating in the Virtual Earth Day 5k and 10k. The event’s page on Eventbrite gives a short explanation:

Is running on your list of fitness goals, but you aren’t sure how to get started? Or perhaps you’re already a runner, but you don’t have the time or you don’t think you’re ready to participate in an organized race?

A virtual 5k might be the answer to your workout woes.

To celebrate the city’s 300th anniversary, Baptist Health System, Tenet Healthcare Foundation, and the YMCA of Greater San Antonio are sponsoring the 300 Miles Quest. This event, which begins with the 10th Annual City Manager’s 5k on October 22nd, encourages everyone in the city to participate by completing 300 miles of running, walking, biking, or swimming before December 31st. According to the 300 Miles Quest website:

This challenge kicks off at the City Manager’s 5K Run on October 22, 2017, and ends on December 31, 2018. Baptist Health System donated $100,000 to the Tricentennial for the 300 Miles program, which will enhance the commemorative year by igniting the community to participate in local 5ks, join running groups and take family walks, for example.

The coolest part? The price and the flexibility!

This is a virtual event, so it’s completely on your schedule. And you can’t beat the price because it’s FREE! Simply log your miles through their handy app or website.
